Ranking the 20 strongest currencies using a single criterion
To compare currencies, a common reference is needed—in this case, the US dollar. The same method is also used when calculating crypto fees in Africa when a purchase combines local currency, foreign exchange and a digital asset. The nominal exchange rate does not, however, include transaction costs.
This ranking compares the current currencies of sovereign states or a monetary union. Shared currencies such as the euro are counted only once, while territorial currencies distinct from those of states are excluded. This scope explains, among other things, why the Cayman Islands dollar and certain territorial pounds do not appear.
The indicative values come from the Central Bank of Kuwait’s exchange rates for October 5, 2026, converted into dollars and rounded. Institutional pegs take precedence over small quotation differences for currencies linked to the dollar. The table does not represent an executable bank quote.
A list based on stability, a currency’s role in international reserves or global trade would produce a different order. Here, “strong” refers solely to the value of one unit. Keeping that definition in mind avoids drawing a conclusion that the table cannot support.
The nominal ranking and tied currencies

| 5 | British pound | GBP | 1,320 |
| 6 | Swiss franc | CHF | 1,203 |
| 7 | Euro | EUR | 1,117 |
| 8 tied | US dollar | USD | 1,000 |

| 8 tied | Panamanian balboa | PAB | 1,000 |
| 11 tied | Singapore dollar | SGD | 0,780 |
| 11 tied | Brunei dollar | BND | 0,780 |
| 13 | Canadian dollar | CAD | 0,700 |
| 14 | Australian dollar | AUD | 0,694 |
| 15 | Azerbaijani manat | AZN | 0,588 |
| 16 | Bosnia and Herzegovina convertible mark | BAM | 0,570 |
| 17 | New Zealand dollar | NZD | 0,559 |
| 18 tied | Barbadian dollar | BBD | 0,500 |
| 18 tied | Belize dollar | BZD | 0,500 |
| 20 | Fijian dollar | FJD | 0,443 |
Ties make it impossible to interpret every line as an independent performance. The peg between two units may explain their shared position. The decimal figures provide a reference point, while an actual exchange depends on the buying or selling rate and the provider’s terms.
The ranking changes when the dollar strengthens or currencies move differently. A reading taken on another day could alter some of the positions that are close together. The leading units have a wider gap in this snapshot, but that does not guarantee they will retain their rank.
Why the Kuwaiti dinar ranks first
The Central Bank of Kuwait describes its exchange-rate policy, which is based on a weighted basket of currencies. The price of one unit reflects that framework and the scale chosen for counting amounts. It does not constitute a global ranking of each resident’s income.
The dinar is divided into fils, allowing small amounts to be expressed. Comparing one whole dinar with one whole dollar means comparing two units whose nominal sizes differ. A currency could use a different subdivision without automatically changing the total value of salaries or account balances.
The second- and third-place currencies also show that expensive units can belong to economies of different sizes. The number of dollars received for one banknote does not indicate how many goods a household can buy locally or the currency’s role in international transactions.
For a traveler or a business, the relevant question remains the net amount received and the expenses expected. A three-dollar unit may correspond to local prices expressed in small fractions. A budget must be assessed by the total amount and the consumption basket.
The euro, pound and Swiss franc: reading the rate in the right direction
An exchange rate can be expressed as dollars per euro or euros per dollar. These two formats describe an inverse relationship. If one euro is worth 1,117 dollars, one dollar is worth approximately 0,895 euros. Confusing the two directions leads to a conversion error, even when the source provides a correct rate.
The European Central Bank publishes reference rates with the euro as the base. To compare those figures with the table, the same orientation must be maintained. Depending on the direction of the pair, division may replace multiplication.
The same rule applies to the pound and Swiss franc. A unit that buys more than one dollar can lose value over a given period while remaining above one dollar. The level of an exchange rate and its change are two separate pieces of information.
Before making a payment, note the currency code, the amount and the direction of the conversion. An app may display a market price and then apply a different rate in the summary. The final screen should allow you to verify the amount actually debited and the amount received by the recipient.
Currency pegs create ties without guaranteeing identical costs
Currencies linked to the dollar can share the same theoretical value. The Bahamian dollar and Panamanian balboa therefore appear at the dollar’s level in this ranking. Payment or withdrawal fees can nevertheless vary depending on the country and banking channel.
The Singapore dollar and Brunei dollar also share an institutional par relationship, described in the MAS monetary interchangeability agreement. This relationship explains their equality in a nominal comparison; it does not provide identical travel budgets for the two destinations.
A peg does not make every account interchangeable. Payment rules, banknote acceptance and fees may depend on the institution. Check the currency code and account terms, even when two units display the same value.
The same caution applies to the CFA francs. Our guide to BCEAO rules in WAEMU notes that the issuing area and financial framework matter. A fixed relationship with another currency does not remove the obligations applicable to the transaction.
A currency with a low unit value can serve a large economy
The number of units needed to buy one dollar does not measure the size of an economy. Prices and incomes use their own scale. A country can choose a currency with a low nominal value without that indicating a current loss of confidence.
Redenomination illustrates this limitation. If one thousand old units become one new unit, salaries and prices are divided by the same proportion. The new unit then rises mechanically in the ranking, while initial purchasing power remains unchanged.
To measure stability, look instead at exchange-rate movements, inflation and convertibility over a defined period. To measure wealth, use income and output indicators, specifying their methodology. These data answer different questions from the nominal table.
Readers must also distinguish a national currency from a digital asset. The price of one whole bitcoin may exceed that of many currency units, but its divisibility and operation make this comparison of little use for assessing the strength of a sovereign currency.
This ranking is not an investment strategy
A reliable ranking should also preserve its source alongside the table rather than reproduce figures without provenance. When updating it, check which units remain in circulation and whether monetary regimes have changed. An old currency may remain in a historical database without belonging in a current list. Documenting exclusions and ties allows readers to reproduce the reasoning and understand a future change in rank.
Buying the currency with the highest unit price does not guarantee a gain. The result depends on the exchange rate when you buy and sell, the fees and the movement of the currency in which your budget is denominated. An unfavorable change can produce a loss even if the unit retains the top nominal position.
Products that provide currency exposure may also add leverage, financing costs or counterparty risk. A ranking cannot be used to assess these features. The product’s mechanism must be understood before making any decision.
Crypto platforms available in Africa require a comparable verification process: local availability, fees, withdrawals and the contracting entity. A stablecoin presented in a strong currency carries its own risks and does not become a guaranteed banknote.
For a transfer or a trip, the table can help check an order of magnitude. For a financial decision, the complete quote and the service terms remain essential. The 20 strongest currencies by nominal value are a dated snapshot that must be interpreted through the units, pegs and actual use of the amount.
