To understand this market from Lomé, start with concrete needs: saving, buying an asset, receiving income or transferring money. This guide brings together the monetary, technical and regulatory information needed to compare the options. It promises neither returns, guaranteed access to a platform nor general authorization for every use.
In brief
- Togo uses the XOF; Mixx by Yas and Moov Money Flooz handle monetary transactions, but not automatically crypto transactions.
- Togo’s March 2026 law recognizes virtual assets within a framework designed to combat illicit financial flows.
- A useful process should explain the costs, custody, receipt and cash-out all the way to the desired outcome.
Crypto in Togo: three balances that do not provide the same rights
Our guide to using Mobile Money to buy crypto helps separate the stages of a transaction. One balance belongs to the local monetary system. An exchange balance may exist only in the platform’s internal accounting. Self-custody allows the user to operate on a blockchain with their own keys. A phone may display all three without making their protections identical.
Mixx by Yas and Moov Money Flooz serve documented local uses. The official Mixx by Yas page for Togo describes transfer and payment services in particular. The Moov Money Flooz application page presents several mobile operations. These features do not prove that the operators issue or guarantee Bitcoin and USDT.
A crypto platform may accept a mobile payment and then credit a digital asset. The payment partner and the party responsible for delivery must then be identified. If the account is debited without a corresponding credit, those two references will help describe the problem. An announcement that says only “crypto with Mobile Money” does not provide enough information about custody or the refund mechanism.
A personal wallet creates a different responsibility. Users must protect the means of authorizing transfers and restoring access. Our explanation of crypto wallets and their backups shows why the units do not physically reside on the phone. Losing the device and losing the keys are not always the same incident. A properly prepared backup can change the outcome.
When comparing tools, ask what each balance represents and who can act on it. A mobile account depends on an issuer and its terms. The exchange generally controls internal withdrawals. With a self-custody wallet, the holder gains more control but does not automatically have access to support that can reverse a mistake. The best interface alone does not determine the appropriate custody model.
Read prices in XOF before talking about gains
Togo uses the West African CFA franc, whose code is XOF. It should not be confused with the XAF used in Central Africa. Our XAF and XOF guide explains the distinction. An offer displayed simply in CFA francs should specify its corridor, payment method and country, especially when a seller uses a regional listing.
Bitcoin has a variable price. A dollar-linked stablecoin targets a different reference and does not permanently fix its value in XOF. The dollar exchange rate, local margin and fees affect the amount paid or received. The guide to converting dollars into CFA francs helps distinguish an exchange-rate reference from a quote that an individual can actually negotiate.
Take a fictional example: an order debits 90,000 XOF to deliver 150 units of a stablecoin to an account. The initial cost is 600 XOF per unit. If a withdrawal fee takes three units, the wallet receives 147 and the net cost rises to approximately 612.24 XOF. The token itself may not have changed in value; in this case, the fee and destination explain the difference.
Another route might deliver 149 units for the same total budget to the same destination. Its net price would be approximately 604.03 XOF. It is better to measure the final quantity than to look only at a fee presented as zero. These figures do not describe any tariff observed in Togo. They illustrate a comparison method that should be replaced with the quotes available when the transaction takes place.
Crypto costs in Africa should include conversions and withdrawals. A purchase followed by a sale can result in a loss even when the price does not move, because of the spread and fees. For an upcoming expense fixed in XOF, this friction should be compared with a direct monetary solution. Taking a detour through a digital asset should provide an identifiable benefit.
Choose a use case and examine its actual value
Learning is one possible use. A limited amount can help someone understand receiving, transferring and backing up funds. The objective should remain specific, using an amount the user can afford to lose without missing an essential obligation. Depositing more to meet a commercial minimum changes the risk taken. That increase should not happen simply because an application encourages the user to top up a balance.
International income creates another issue. A client may offer payment in stablecoins, but the professional must know the network, token and conversion terms. The invoice and contract are still needed to explain the origin of the payment. The recipient should calculate the net XOF available for the business rather than treating a token amount as guaranteed local income.
A family transfer requires consideration of the recipient’s skills. Someone expecting cash may not want to manage a backup, a network and a P2P sale. Blockchain may simplify one part of the process while making the final step more difficult. Comparing the outcome through to cash or a mobile balance reveals where the work has shifted. The useful option must suit both parties.
Exposure to Bitcoin does not meet the same need as a payment. Its price can rise or fall sharply, with no schedule aligned to a personal deadline. Technical scarcity guarantees no future price. A budget intended for tuition, healthcare or near-term rent may not have enough time to withstand a price swing. Risky investment and funds needed immediately must be kept separate.
Yield offers add another contract. A promised daily income may depend on lending, leverage or an activity the seller does not describe. The words Bitcoin or USDT in a program’s name are not economic proof. Demand a verifiable explanation of the revenue, possible losses and withdrawal process. If no one can provide one, the mechanism should not be treated as simple asset holding.
Distinguish applicable law, authorization and regional regulatory work
The Togolese text No. 2026-001 of March 2, 2026, published by CENTIF, brings virtual assets and their service providers within the framework for combating money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation. This legal recognition does not mean that every token benefits from a public guarantee. An asset defined by law may be subject to obligations without becoming an approved investment.
The classification depends on the activity. Holding assets for oneself, regularly converting client funds and safeguarding their keys do not describe the same role. A professional activity therefore requires a specific review of the relevant authorizations and obligations. One should not infer universal permission from the absence of a technical block in an application. Access to an exchange website does not replace proof of its regulatory status.
The BCEAO has also announced work on a regional crypto-asset framework at its May 8, 2026 conference. Regulatory preparations are not the same as a final text already in force. To track developments, keep the source, date and scope. A communiqué may announce work in progress without answering every question faced by an operator.
The BCEAO rules discussed in our WAEMU guide clarify regional distinctions. A payment license does not automatically prove authorization to hold crypto assets. The presence of a known monetary partner may secure one stage without covering all the others. The file should allocate evidence to each service and identify the entity making the relevant claim.
The limits of the research should remain explicit. This guide is not a consolidated review of every implementing measure or an exhaustive register of licensed platforms. Nor does it state a single tax rate for all crypto income. Residence, status and the nature of the activity require a tailored analysis. For a business or a substantial amount, local advice may help classify the flows before they are put in place.
Prepare a decision file and an incident scenario
A practical worksheet can bring together the need, budget, starting currency, asset received, network, costs and exit route. Add the provider’s legal name and official contact details. Unknown information should remain visible. A reassuring note or arbitrary ranking cannot replace missing evidence. The reader should be able to explain why the service meets the specific task.
Before a transaction, consider what happens if the payment goes through but the credit does not arrive, if the exchange suspends withdrawals or if the phone disappears. Each incident involves a different mechanism. Transaction references help reconcile a payment; a backup helps restore a wallet; the contract describes certain remedies. No single tool resolves every failure in the chain.
Keep an economic record: date, XOF debited or received, quantity, fees, recipient and supporting document. A blockchain identifier explains the technical movement, but not necessarily its purpose. A transfer between your own wallets should not be counted twice as revenue. This discipline makes it easier to calculate costs and respond to legitimate requests about the source of funds.
Secret codes, passwords and recovery phrases should not be included in a file sent to support. A screenshot can conceal sensitive data while showing a status and reference. Recovery offers that request a private payment or wallet keys require particular caution. Adding a second uncertain transaction is not a way to resolve the first incident.
Crypto in Togo therefore deserves to be assessed by function. Mobile payments, Bitcoin and stablecoins may serve different needs, but none automatically replaces the others. A prepared decision compares the full cost, the rights involved and the exit route. When the process remains impossible to explain, not committing funds is a useful conclusion—not a failure of technological ambition.
