AI: CENSWEB launches campaign to make Claude accessible in the DRC
CENSWEB is campaigning to make Claude AI accessible in the DRC, which remains absent from the list of eligible countries.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo remains absent from the list of countries where Anthropic offers Claude.ai and its commercial API. In response, CENSWEB has launched Claude for DRC. The initiative aims to understand the obstacles to access and open a dialogue with the US company.
The DRC remains excluded while several neighboring countries have access to Claude
The regional disparity is difficult to ignore.
According to Anthropic’s official list, Claude.ai and the API are available in Rwanda. They are also available in Burundi, Uganda, Zambia, the Central African Republic and the Republic of the Congo.
The DRC, however, is still not listed.
Anthropic has not publicly provided a specific explanation for the DRC’s absence. The company nevertheless says that access to its services may depend on legal, regulatory and security considerations, among other factors.
This lack of explanation is precisely what CENSWEB wants to clarify.
The Congolese organization is asking Anthropic to outline the conditions that would need to be met for the DRC to join the regions officially supported by the company.
CENSWEB wants to open a dialogue with Anthropic
Named Claude for DRC, the initiative is built around several requests.
CENSWEB first wants Anthropic to reassess the DRC’s eligibility for Claude.ai and its API. The organization is also requesting details about any obstacles currently preventing access from being opened.
The idea, however, goes beyond simple access to the chatbot.
CENSWEB is proposing that Anthropic explore a pilot program focused on education, AI literacy, developers and civil society organizations.
Students, teachers, researchers, developers and entrepreneurs could benefit from supervised access. They would also receive training in the responsible use of AI.
CENSWEB has already submitted a request through Anthropic’s programs for nonprofit organizations. It has also taken further steps with the Claude ecosystem.
Rwanda shows that an African partnership is possible
The Congolese request comes as Anthropic is already developing institutional partnerships in Africa.
In February 2026, the company signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with the Rwandan government. The partnership notably covers education, healthcare and the use of artificial intelligence in the public sector.
It also includes training, API credits, the use of Claude and Claude Code by public-sector developers, and the strengthening of local skills.
For CENSWEB, this precedent shows that a dialogue on the responsible deployment of Claude in Central Africa is possible.
As a result, the organization wants to understand what needs to be done, including potentially on the part of Congolese institutions.
The campaign should now be extended to universities, technology communities, digital organizations and interested institutions.
The question raised by Claude for DRC is: what is currently preventing Claude from being officially accessible in the DRC, and how can these obstacles be removed?
