For a resident, merchant or member of the diaspora, the useful question concerns the outcome: how much money will actually become available, to whom and on what date? This guide provides local reference points and a comparison method. It does not recommend any seller or turn a technical possibility into legal authorization.
In brief
- MRU refers to the current ouguiya; older amounts in MRO require an explicit conversion.
- Bankily and Masrvi offer digital banking services, not a presumed guaranteed delivery of crypto.
- Compare costs through to the final currency and keep proof of every step in the process.
Crypto in Mauritania: start with the amount that is actually useful
The right starting point is your final expense. Our guide to the full cost of buying crypto in Africa helps compare two routes without focusing only on their advertised commission. A transfer intended to pay a bill in MRU should be assessed by the MRU available after all conversions, not simply by the speed of an intermediate digital transfer.
Specify the unit as well. The decree establishing the monetary unit, published by AMI, documents the reform that took effect in January 2018. The current ouguiya is equivalent to ten old ouguiyas. An offer of 50,000 MRO therefore represents 5,000 MRU under this conversion relationship, not a budget ten times larger. This calculation does not describe a change in purchasing power.
In a quote, do not leave this distinction to the word “ouguiya” alone. Write MRU next to every amount and ask for confirmation when the other party uses an older reference. A token’s price may appear unusually low or high simply because the parties are using different units. That ambiguity must be eliminated before payment.
The final currency may also differ from that of the immediate recipient. A relative may receive a dollar-denominated asset but still need to pay a school or supplier in MRU. The process then involves an additional sale, with its own terms. Being able to receive a token does not guarantee being able to convert it into the required amount at the expected time.
Write down the need without naming a product: pay for a service, send family support, learn about custody or maintain limited exposure. Add the amount and deadline. You can then compare a banking solution, an authorized transfer and a possible crypto route without deciding in advance that the chosen technology must solve every use case.
Distinguishing mobile banking, wallets and digital assets
The official presentation of Bankily describes a service operated by Banque Populaire de Mauritanie. Masrvi, for its part, presents a digital banking service from BMCI. Identifying the providers matters more than the similarity between their interfaces. A phone may display a bank account, a claim on a platform or a wallet controlled by private keys.
Our guide to buying crypto with mobile payments explains why the evidence must remain separate. A bank receipt may confirm payment to the seller. It does not prove that the seller delivered the agreed token. A blockchain transaction may confirm another event without, on its own, explaining the commercial contract that prompted it.
The word “wallet” also requires verification. Some services hold the assets and display a balance to the customer. Others give users the ability to sign transactions directly. Our guide to how crypto wallets work helps identify the difference. An app’s appearance does not always reveal who can move the funds.
Another source of confusion concerns public digital currency. In April 2024, Giesecke+Devrient announced an exploratory agreement with the central bank on a digital ouguiya. The announcement documents work on a possible central bank currency. It does not demonstrate either a current general launch or approval of Bitcoin or USDT.
These distinctions help avoid rushed conclusions. Progress in digital payments does not prove measured growth in crypto adoption. An experimental public project does not guarantee a private token. For every claim, ask what exactly is involved and what evidence supports it. The same marketing expression can conceal very different rights over the displayed value.
Check access and the framework without importing a neighboring country’s rules
Mauritania has its own institutions and currency. An app’s status in another country does not establish the status of your local transaction. Our method for comparing platforms and their legal status recommends starting with the provider’s legal name, the product and the eligible user profile, rather than assuming that an international reputation is sufficient.
The BCM fintech directory notably presents texts concerning payments, electronic money and personal data. This documentation provides a useful starting point. On its own, however, it does not establish that all crypto activity falls under the same authorization or that finding no result in an internet search is equivalent to approval.
This research did not establish general legal certification for buying, trading or holding all cryptoassets in Mauritania. Nor did it demonstrate the local registration of any particular seller. For a professional activity or a significant sum, have a qualified adviser assess the flows and services using the terms actually offered to the customer.
Commercial access has several levels: downloading the app, opening an account, accessing the product and making a withdrawal. A visible page does not prove that your residence or payment method will provide access to all four. Use your real identity. Renting an account or declaring a false residence can lead to a difficult-to-resolve freeze when the service controls the funds or requests additional documents.
For data-related matters, our guide to KYC and remedies helps prepare a consistent file. Verify the recipient before sending an identity document. Verification codes and recovery phrases are never substitutes for supporting documents: they provide the power to act. An intermediary who asks for them to verify an order creates an immediate risk.
Calculate the full route rather than an isolated fee
Consider a completely fictional example. A budget of 4,200 MRU results in 100 usable units with A, compared with 102 with B, under identical destination conditions. The cost reaches 42 MRU per unit with A and approximately 41.18 MRU with B. The comparison concerns final delivery and does not assume that either offer currently exists on the Mauritanian market.
Now suppose the 100 units are resold at 39 MRU each, with 100 MRU in final charges. The sale produces 3,900 MRU gross and then 3,800 MRU net. The difference from the 4,200 MRU committed is 400 MRU, or approximately 9.52%. A theoretical stability of the asset in its reference currency does not eliminate this commercial friction.
Classify costs by their unit and timing. Some increase the payment in currency; others reduce the number of units received. A charge already included in the quote must not be counted twice. An unknown cost should remain explicitly unknown. Arbitrarily assigning it a value of zero makes the route appear artificially attractive and can distort the entire decision.
The timeframe must also cover the entire journey: payment validation, seller processing, transfer, crediting and final conversion. A transaction broadcast quickly on a network does not guarantee that MRU will be immediately available. Ask for the timeframe that matches the beneficiary’s needs, as well as the procedure to follow if a step remains pending or requires documents.
Minimums can change the budget. An amount sufficient for a purchase may still fall below the withdrawal threshold. If the user must then add more funds to the account, their exposure exceeds the initial plan. Before starting, therefore, check the minimum amounts for buying, transferring and withdrawing, using a solution that works for your actual quantity.
Prepare for incidents and recognize the limits of the decision
A useful transaction file brings together the offer, the counterparty’s name, amounts, units, dates and references. Keep these documents in a private, backed-up location, separate from the secrets that allow funds to be spent. This timeline helps distinguish money not received by the seller, an uncompleted conversion and an asset transferred to the wrong destination.
A successful first transaction does not certify the provider’s solvency. It may confirm a limited route, but it does not guarantee future amounts or forthcoming withdrawal conditions. Repeat the checks whenever the beneficiary, network or company changes. Familiarity with an interface should not replace reviewing a new instruction.
Plan for a solution independent of your main phone. Losing the line, device or messaging service does not have the same consequences for every service. A bank account may provide a recovery procedure; a personal wallet requires an appropriate backup of its keys. Do not assume that every balance can be recovered with a simple call to support.
If an account is blocked, reject improvised payments supposedly required to activate a withdrawal or pay a tax to a private wallet. Contact the relevant party through a verified channel. Someone offering guaranteed recovery in exchange for an advance may exploit the initial incident to cause another loss. Urgency is not a reason to abandon the evidence.
Ultimately, the most useful decision keeps four reference points in view: the exact currency, each party’s responsibility, the net outcome and the exit route. Crypto can address a specific need without becoming a universal solution. If any of these reference points is missing, postponing a transaction offers better protection than proceeding with a poorly understood route whose difficulties only emerge after the first payment.
