Stablecoins in Chad: the dollar risk behind XAF prices

Stablecoins in Chad can seem attractive because they promise to preserve dollar value without volatility. But households and businesses spending in Central African CFA francs measure their outcome in XAF, where exchange rates, local prices and fees can change the amount recovered even when the token stays near its peg.

Stablecoins in Chad can appeal to users because of a promise that is often misunderstood: preserving dollar value without experiencing volatility. But households and businesses that spend in Central African CFA francs (XAF) do not measure their outcome in dollars alone. Exchange rates, local prices and fees can change the amount ultimately recoverable even when the token remains close to its peg.

Users must also identify the issuer, the nature of its reserves, redemption rights and the intermediaries involved. This guide explains these layers of risk without recommending any stablecoin or certifying a local funding route. An asset described as stable does not replace regulatory checks, a readily available spending reserve or a documented exit strategy.

In brief

  • A dollar stablecoin seeks stability against the dollar, not a constant amount in XAF, whose exchange rate depends on the euro.
  • Issuer reserves, custody on a platform and exit liquidity are separate risks that must be assessed independently.
  • The useful result is calculated in net XAF that can actually be recovered after all costs, not simply by the number of tokens shown in the wallet.

Stablecoins in Chad: define the currency of the need

Our guide to the difference between XAF and XOF provides the right starting point. Chad uses XAF, the Central African CFA franc. For a local expense, the relevant benchmark is the amount actually available in that currency—not a digital balance presented as “dollar equivalent.”

The BEAC states the parity at 655.957 XAF to the euro. That official relationship does not fix the dollar’s exchange rate against the XAF. If the dollar falls against the euro, its XAF value also falls, all else being equal. A stablecoin that correctly tracks the dollar can therefore lose value when measured in the currency used for spending in Chad.

Consider a deliberately fictional example, with no current exchange rate implied: 300 tokens worth one dollar each equal 183,000 XAF if the dollar is worth 610 XAF. At 570 XAF per dollar, the same 300 tokens represent 171,000 XAF before fees. The difference is 12,000 XAF, without assuming that the token has lost its dollar peg.

The need may be different when a future invoice is genuinely denominated in dollars. That does not automatically make a stablecoin suitable: the permitted route, contract, liquidity and technical risks still need to be checked. Matching an asset’s currency to that of an obligation may reduce one specific mismatch, but not every source of uncertainty.

Before assessing a product, write down the currency, amount and date of the need. A reserve for immediate expenses should not depend on a conversion whose price and timing remain unknown. Defining the need first helps avoid a common mistake: choosing a popular token and only afterward looking for a reason to hold it.

Assess the stability promise and the reserves

Stablecoins do not all rely on the same mechanism. Some are backed by reserve assets and an identifiable issuer; others use crypto collateral or different mechanisms. The name and observed price do not reveal the quality of the system. A long period near one dollar does not rule out a future break.

Tether’s transparency information illustrates the type of documentation to examine for an issuer: declared composition, the date of the data and available reports. This information should not become a claim about every token described as a “dollar” asset. Nor does it certify the solvency of a platform holding tokens on behalf of its customers.

Reading a report’s scope helps prevent overinterpretation. An attestation on a given date does not necessarily describe all future risks or every intermediary company. Ask who publishes it, who verifies it, what period it covers and what limitations it identifies. A marketing summary may omit precisely the reservations that matter to the user.

Tether’s terms also distinguish the issuer’s direct services and their conditions. Buying a token from a secondary seller does not guarantee personal access to direct redemption. For a holder in Chad, the exit route may depend on an intermediary and a local market whose terms must be checked separately.

The risk of freezing or restrictions deserves separate attention when an issuer has such powers. Self-custody does not eliminate every constraint attached to the token. The holder must understand what the keys control and what still depends on the contract or the asset’s operation. “In my wallet” does not mean “with no third party involved.”

Separate issuer, platform and network risk

Our guide to crypto wallets and custody helps distinguish these layers. If a company holds the tokens, the customer depends on its withdrawal rules, security and ability to return the assets. If the customer controls the keys, they must protect their secrets and select the correct transfer settings.

An issuer may operate normally while a platform suspends withdrawals. A network may continue processing transactions while a wallet fails to recognize the token received. A counterparty may also refuse to buy an asset that is technically available. These different incidents cannot be resolved through the same action or with the same party.

The network chosen must match the recipient’s capabilities and the terms of the services being used. Check the exact asset, relevant identifier, address and any additional instructions before transferring. A low apparent fee is not a reason to choose an unsupported version. The hypothetical possibility of recovering funds after an error should not form part of the normal plan.

Users must also plan for the fees required for a later transfer. Depending on the network and wallet, another asset may be needed to pay the technical fee. A displayed stablecoin balance therefore does not guarantee that a transfer can be executed immediately. Current information from the service and network should guide the calculation, not a general rule found in an old tutorial.

Diversification also requires examining dependencies. Spreading the same token across several applications may reduce the risk of relying on a single access point while leaving the same issuer or network involved. Adding interfaces without understanding their common dependencies can sometimes complicate backups without providing the protection expected. The list of possible failure points matters more than the number of applications installed.

Measure liquidity and the cost of converting back to XAF

The guide to total crypto costs provides the basic method: start with the funds committed and finish with the funds available. A price shown on an international screen does not guarantee a local sale at the same level. Requesting an executable quote, a covered amount and an authorized route helps distinguish theoretical valuation from a real exit.

Fictional simulation: buying 300 units for a total cost of 186,000 XAF and selling them at 590 XAF produces 177,000 XAF before exit fees. If those fees reach 2,000 XAF, the available result falls to 175,000 XAF. The difference from the initial cost is 11,000 XAF, even assuming the number of tokens remains unchanged.

The local price may include a premium, a discount and payment costs. An urgent need can force the seller to accept less favorable terms. Do not rely on a specific seller returning at a future date without verified commitment. A market that can be viewed is not the same as a counterparty ready to buy the desired amount when needed.

Our platform verification method puts status before price. In Chad, the banking framework and the payment operator’s terms must be examined before conversion. A stablecoin does not create an exemption from applicable restrictions and does not justify making a false statement about the purpose of a transfer.

The relationship between Mobile Money and crypto must also remain clear: a mobile account does not guarantee the token, and the token does not guarantee monetary withdrawal. Planning for both steps avoids discovering that no exit is available after purchase. If the route remains unverified, the exposure should not be presented as immediately available cash.

Build a custody and incident plan

Start with a reserve for essential expenses outside the risky route, then determine what could be lost or immobilized without causing unacceptable harm. This principle does not establish a universal allocation percentage. A family, employee or business faces different deadlines and responsibilities. The decision should reflect those constraints rather than a promised return.

Document purchases, transfers and exits with dates, currencies, quantities and references. The guide to KYC checks and remedies explains the value of consistent records. A blockchain record does not necessarily describe the contract, the economic origin of the funds or the person who was supposed to receive the counter-value.

Prepare for several incidents: loss of access, a withdrawal refusal, a broken peg, a network outage or an absent counterparty. For each one, determine what action is possible and its limits. A backup solves certain technical problems; it does not repair inadequate reserves held by an issuer. Moving all funds in haste to a website sent by a stranger can turn concern into an actual loss.

Avoid yield offers presented as an inherent feature of the stablecoin. Income comes from an additional activity and risk: lending, investment, an intermediary or a specific mechanism. The token’s sought-after stability does not guarantee the strategy using it. A high rate without a verifiable explanation should trigger an investigation, not a larger deposit.

Stablecoins in Chad should therefore be assessed through two questions: what value could be recovered in XAF, and what conditions would actually make that recovery possible? Understanding the peg is not enough. The issuer, custody, network, liquidity and payment framework must form a documented route. Without that chain, the word “stable” mainly creates an impression of security that the facts do not guarantee.
