This guide sets out the checks to complete before making any commitment. It does not certify any platform, local intermediary or payment method. The rules applicable to supervised institutions, the terms of the service used and the buyer’s circumstances must support the proposed transaction. Without confirmation, it is better not to transfer the funds.
In brief
- Compare offers based on the XAF actually debited and the net BTC delivered, not just an advertised fee.
- Identify the seller and the payment recipient; a different person or a last-minute change in payment details is a reason to suspend the order.
- Prepare the wallet and the exit route before buying, while keeping records without disclosing recovery secrets.
Buying Bitcoin in Chad: validate the process first
The guide to crypto platforms and their legal status provides an initial framework. For a specific offer, the trading brand must be matched to the contracting company. A website’s name does not always identify the entity holding the funds or handling complaints from a resident of Chad.
COBAC recalled restrictions on cryptoassets in May 2022 within the scope of supervised institutions. This means it cannot be assumed that a bank transfer or mobile-money transfer to a crypto seller will be accepted. The check must come before the purchase; a technically completed transaction does not prove that it complies with the rules.
Ask the relevant parties for confirmation covering the exact service, rather than a vague answer about “transfers.” Describe the transaction, residency, currency and parties honestly. An operator that refuses this process should not be bypassed with a false reason, a borrowed account or artificially split payments.
It is also important to understand what the seller is promising: withdrawable native BTC, simple exposure to the price or a credit in its own interface. An offer without a clear withdrawal option does not meet the needs of a buyer seeking self-custody. The quote should identify the asset and network, not merely display an image of an orange coin.
The absence of a verifiable process is already a useful result. There is no obligation to buy in order to complete the research. A user can learn the units, examine the fees and prepare backups without committing money. This step reduces the risk of accepting a questionable offer simply because it appears to be the only one immediately available.
Building a comparable quote in CFA francs
XAF refers to the BEAC CFA franc used in Chad. Our explanation of the difference between XAF and XOF helps avoid comparing two offers denominated in different monetary systems. Asking for the exact currency, how long the price remains valid and the total amount payable establishes a common basis.
A usable quote should include at least the amount debited, any payment fees, the purchase price, the service commission, withdrawal fees and the net BTC sent to the destination. A “zero fees” label is not enough: the proposed price may include a margin. The economics of the transaction are reflected in the final result.
Consider a hypothetical example with no real-world pricing. Offer A requires a total of 102 000 XAF and delivers 0.002 BTC. The effective cost is 51 000 000 XAF per BTC. Offer B requires 100 000 XAF but delivers 0.0019 BTC, resulting in an effective cost of approximately 52 631 579 XAF per BTC. The lower upfront expense does not produce the better unit price.
This calculation does not automatically identify a winner. An offer may have unverifiable status or an uncertain withdrawal process despite offering a better price. First apply the compliance and security criteria that could disqualify an offer, then compare costs among the options that are genuinely acceptable. The risk of losing everything is not offset by a few percentage points of savings.
Our method for calculating total crypto fees helps distinguish fixed from proportional costs. The impact of a fixed withdrawal fee decreases as the amount rises, but that does not justify increasing exposure beyond a manageable budget. Adjusting the plan or walking away may cost less than making an oversized transaction solely to spread a commission over a larger amount.
Prepare the destination before paying
For self-custody, install authentic software and understand the backup process before requesting delivery. Do not wait until the seller urgently asks for an address. Our guide to the crypto wallet explains the difference between an application, an account held by a company and direct control of the keys.
The address should come from the receiving wallet and use the expected network. Checking all the details at the moment they are used reduces copying and substitution errors. A compromised computer or phone can alter a copied address; a checking habit is more valuable than automatically trusting the clipboard.
Some services offer several networks or assets with similar names. A cheaper option may deliver something other than the native BTC requested. Read the documentation for both the receiving wallet and the transfer provider. A similar-looking address does not prove compatibility, and any potential recovery should never be assumed.
The precautions outlined by Bitcoin.org highlight the consequences of mistakes and the need to protect access. A small test transaction can verify that the technical process works once the broader process has already been validated. It does not prove that the seller will honor a larger order or that the funds used have a legitimate origin.
Before testing, check minimum amounts and fees so that the withdrawal does not produce an amount that is too small. The process should remain proportionate to the need. Making multiple transfers without a clear reason adds costs and records, not necessarily security. A good test checks a specific assumption, such as receipt at the prepared destination.
Check the counterparty without stepping outside the rules
An online reputation is not enough to establish an identity. Reviews may concern small transactions, an earlier period or a compromised account. For an authorized transaction, compare the contractual name, payment-account holder and previously confirmed details. Any unexpected change calls for verification through an independent official channel.
Our report on KYC, data and recourse helps prepare useful documents without sending them to just anyone. A platform may ask about the source of funds; that does not mean a private seller needs the wallet’s recovery phrase. The request should match the authority being granted.
Do not pay an order to a different beneficiary on the grounds that a limit has been reached. Nor should you agree to make a false statement about the purpose of the payment. Such arrangements blur the evidence and may create difficulties with the operator, platform or authorities. A legitimate need deserves a clear process, not a story to memorize.
The discussion should retain the elements explaining the order: asset, quantity, price, stated timeline and each party’s responsibility. An intermediary who systematically moves conversations to private messaging may remove part of the usable evidence. Keeping your own copies does not mean publishing the counterparty’s personal data in a group.
Commercial pressure is a reason for caution, especially when it prevents careful review. An offer valid for only a few seconds does not justify giving a verification code to a stranger. If the conditions do not allow calm verification, stopping the transaction is safer than trying to repair an order that has become confusing.
Reconcile delivery, final cost and the possibility of an exit
After delivery, compare the BTC received with the quote and retain the relevant references. If a blockchain transfer is involved, the transaction ID should match the correct destination and amount. A balance held on a platform requires another check: can a withdrawal be requested under the stated terms, without an unexpected new requirement?
A request for additional money to “release the Bitcoin” requires an independently documented explanation. Do not confuse a disclosed fee with a commercial ransom invented after payment. If something appears abnormal, stop making payments, file an official complaint and preserve the factual records. A second irreversible transaction can worsen the initial loss.
The exit should be studied before entering the position. A buyer who receives BTC without knowing an authorized way to recover XAF is left with exposure that may be difficult to mobilize. Check the sale terms, timelines, required documents and costs, without assuming that a seller buying today will still be a buyer tomorrow.
The economic result should be calculated using the funds available, not the most favorable price seen since the purchase. If 102 000 XAF were committed and the net exit produced 96 000 XAF, the loss would be 6 000 XAF. This example says nothing about the current market; it shows why the result must account for the entire process.
Buying properly means more than seeing a positive balance on screen. It requires connecting an authorized transaction, an identifiable counterparty, documented payment, a delivered quantity and an understood exit route. If that chain cannot be established in Chad for the service under consideration, the professional decision is to wait for a verifiable solution rather than improvise.
