Crypto in Chad is difficult to understand when three distinct things are conflated: the BEAC CFA franc, the balance of a mobile money account and an asset recorded on a blockchain. All three may appear on a phone, but they do not provide the same rights, recourse or financial exposure.
Before looking for an app, it is therefore essential to define the objective: learning, holding a risky asset, receiving value or paying an expense. This guide provides a verification method, not an endorsement of every possible transaction. The existence of an online offering proves neither that it is authorised nor that it can deliver CFA francs.
In brief
- Chad uses the Central African CFA franc, identified as XAF, not the West African XOF.
- A Mobile Money balance is not Bitcoin or a stablecoin; moving between these worlds requires separate checks.
- The quality of a transaction pathway depends on the status of the parties involved, the total costs and whether the funds can genuinely be withdrawn—not just on the displayed price.
Crypto in Chad: start with the right currency
The first reference point is our guide to the difference between XAF and XOF. Both currencies share a peg to the euro, but they are issued by different institutions. An advertisement that simply says “CFA” is therefore ambiguous, and that ambiguity must be resolved before comparing prices or payment methods.
The BEAC specifies the legal currency of its union and its parity: one euro corresponds to 655.957 CFA francs. This official monetary reference is not a guaranteed commercial price for purchasing a digital asset. An intermediary may add a margin, commission and fees related to payment or delivery.
Take a purely educational example, without using a current price: a value of 200 euros corresponds mathematically to 131,191.40 XAF at this parity. If a service charges 135,000 XAF for a product valued on that basis, the difference is 3,808.60 XAF. It is still necessary to understand what the product contains and what its holder can actually withdraw.
Bitcoin introduces its own price volatility. A dollar-pegged stablecoin also creates exposure to the dollar-euro exchange rate, since the XAF maintains its parity with the euro. Seeking stability against the dollar therefore does not guarantee a constant amount of CFA francs when selling.
Recording the unit at every stage helps prevent simple mistakes: XAF paid, quantity of tokens received, the asset in which fees are charged, and the amount of XAF that can ultimately be recovered. Comparing two screenshots without following this chain amounts to comparing an initial price with a final bill. The amounts may look similar even though the obligations and service differ substantially.
Identify what you actually hold
A mobile account holds value according to the rules of its issuer. A crypto platform may show a claim against the company until a withdrawal is completed. A personal wallet allows users to manage keys that provide access to assets on a network. The same word, “wallet,” can sometimes conceal all three situations.
Our guide to how crypto wallets work helps clarify this distinction. The decisive question is control: who can sign a transfer, suspend a withdrawal or restore access? Someone who only has the password to an account does not necessarily control the keys used by the service.
Holding your own keys removes one particular dependency, but creates other responsibilities. Recovery information must be backed up, never shared and made accessible if the phone is lost. Entrusting assets to a company shifts these tasks to the company without eliminating the risks of failure, blocking or fraud.
Local electronic money does not become cryptocurrency simply because a seller accepts a mobile transfer. The services presented by Moov Africa Chad include transfers, payments and withdrawals. This description does not demonstrate an official integration with a particular blockchain or crypto platform.
The name and the asset must also be distinguished. A token with “dollar” in its name may have no serious reserve or redemption mechanism. A copied symbol is not proof of authenticity. The network, the relevant technical identifier and the issuer’s documentation matter more than the colour of a logo.
Separate banking rules from a service’s status
The COBAC press release of 6 May 2022 recalls restrictions concerning crypto-assets and regulated institutions. It warns against assuming that a transaction is automatically permitted simply because an application is accessible or because it can be funded through a bank or mobile service. On its own, it is also not enough to legally characterise every individual holding.
Meanwhile, COSUMAF lists digital-asset service providers among the regional financial market intermediaries. These frameworks should be read together, rather than treated as contradictory slogans. A framework covering certain services does not turn every seller encountered on a messaging app into an authorised professional.
To verify a provider, request its exact legal name, country of establishment, service offered and the authorisation it claims to hold. A commercial registration number is not a substitute for the relevant financial authorisation. A foreign licence may provide information about a company without automatically covering its activities toward a resident of Chad.
Identity requirements, the source of funds and financial relations with foreign countries must also be part of the analysis. Our guide to KYC checks and recourse explains why documentary checks may occur at several stages. Providing consistent information offers more protection than attempting to conceal your residence or the nature of the payment.
This guide does not establish any Chadian tax rate for crypto: the sources reviewed do not make it possible to provide a consolidated rule applicable to every case here. A professional project, fundraising effort or significant transaction warrants tailored advice. The cost of checking in advance may prevent an undertaking that becomes impossible to regularise later.
Assess the full transaction pathway before committing funds
An attractive price loses its appeal when the minimum withdrawal exceeds the budget or when local withdrawal remains undefined. Ask for a dated quote, the total amount debited, the net quantity delivered and the cancellation terms. Adding a precise withdrawal destination can reveal a network incompatibility earlier.
Calculating crypto fees in Africa involves more than the advertised commission. A foreign-exchange margin may cost more than the visible fees. Payment, withdrawal and final conversion fees may also accumulate. Their existence must be checked; no generic rate replaces the one presented for the transaction under consideration.
Fictitious example: a budget of 60,000 XAF leaves 58,800 XAF after 1,200 XAF in initial costs. A subsequent 10% decline in that value brings it down to 52,920 XAF, before any withdrawal fees. The total drop is already 7,080 XAF compared with the budget, even without a technical incident.
Availability matters as much as value. Funds needed for rent or a purchase of goods should not depend on an unknown seller, a network or a withdrawal subject to review. A learning exercise can begin without a real purchase: reading a public transaction and calculating a quote does not require transferring your savings.
The mechanisms described in our guide to crypto and Mobile Money do not authorise anyone to circumvent local rules. If the operator or provider refuses the intended use, suspend the process. Changing the payment description artificially or using a third-party account adds risk instead of resolving the obstacle.
Organise the evidence and know when to walk away
Before an authorised transaction, prepare a concise but usable file containing the counterparty’s identity, the quote, the terms, the order reference and the official complaints channel. After execution, keep the receipt and any available transaction ID. These records document what happened; they guarantee neither a refund nor automatic recognition of a right.
Never share a verification code, PIN or recovery phrase to “unlock” a delivery. A pressured contact may use a genuine network problem as a pretext. Finding support independently through the official website reduces the risk of speaking to a fake agent who has copied a familiar photo or name.
If payment has been made without delivery, stop making additional transfers and distinguish between the parties involved. The payment operator handles the movement of money according to its procedures; the seller or platform is responsible for the promised delivery. A blockchain transaction alone does not prove that the right recipient received the right asset on the right network.
A refusal to provide an identifiable company, a request to pay a third party or a promise of guaranteed returns are concrete reasons to walk away. A group’s popularity does not remedy any of these shortcomings. A cautious buyer should be able to explain the transaction pathway without repeating the seller’s commercial assurances.
Also plan around your own timetable: the date the funds are needed, the time available to verify the documents and the acceptable period of immobilisation. A solution suitable for non-urgent research may be inappropriate for a bill due tomorrow. This constraint belongs in the decision alongside the advertised price.
For Chad, the useful decision ultimately comes down to a few ordered checks: the right currency, the right asset, the right provider, the applicable rules, the total cost and a documented exit. If one essential link is missing, waiting is not a missed opportunity. Above all, it prevents an information search from becoming debt, a dispute or a permanent loss.
